Continuing Resources & Webinars
Travelers Insurance Webinar - "Product Safety -
Warnings and Instructions"
Recorded October 24, 2007
Geoffrey Peckham, Clarion Safety Systems president, was one of the
panelists for this information-packed webinar, sponsered by Travelers
Insurance. The topic of discussion was warnings and instructions, their
integral part in the design process and their reinforcement of the safe
use of a product. What is "adequate" or "effective"
can vary based upon many factors such as the product, who is using it,
and the usage environment. Mr. Peckham spoke about the ANSI Z535 series
of standards, which are applicable to both industrial and consumer
products.
The webinar also provided an overview of the new ANSI Z535.6 - 2006
standard for Safety Information in Product Manuals, Instructions, and
Other Collateral Materials. That standard aims to help unify the labels
on a product or workspace with the labels in the instruction manual, an
important factor in boosting worker safety.

News
Around the world, Clarion is a leader in reducing risk and protecting
people. Here are some highlights.
New Escape Plan Signs Will Save Lives
Clarion Safety Systems President Geoff Peckham was among a select group of
safety experts meeting in Berlin recently to review the protocols and
symbology for new Escape Plan Signs, which are the focus of the
soon-to-be-approved standard ISO 23601.
Clarion believes the signs will help direct building occupants to safety
in any emergency - including when lights and power are lost. Read a
full account
of how this standard came to pass and what it will mean for building
managers and owners.
Clarion To Represent U.S. On Critical ISO Panel
Clarion Safety Systems president Geoffrey Peckham has been selected to be
the ANSI Z535 expert representing the U.S. to an ISO committee that is
reviewing design principles for safety signs in workplaces and public
areas. Formally known as the "Technical Advisory Committee
ISO/TC 145 Graphical Symbols for the revision of ISO 3864-1:2002 Graphical
symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Part 1: Design principles for
safety signs in workplaces and public areas," this important
international standard outlines how to convey safety information to
prevent accidents, protect from fire and health hazards, and provide for
safe emergency building evacuation.
Worldwide standards use graphic-only signs, and Clarion is a recognized
leader in compliance and design for both ANSI and ISO standards.
Clarion Named Outstanding Business of the Year
The Pike County Chamber of Commerce hailed Clarion Safety Systems as Pike
County's Outstanding Business of the Year for 2007. Founder Geoffrey
Peckham started Clarion Safety Systems in 1990 to design and manufacture
safety labels. Clarion is located in a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired
building in Milford, PA.
As importantly, Clarion donates a significant portion of its profits to
helping people locally and globally. The
Tri-State Pregnancy Center,
Young Life, and
Children's HopeChest
are three organizations supported by Clarion, among many others. Clarion
serves to make the world a better place.
New Name: Hazard Communication Systems is Now Clarion Safety Systems
Clarion Safety Systems is the new name for Hazard Communication Systems
(HCS), a designer, manufacturer, and distributor of safety labels,
signage, and markings in Milford, PA. The company was founded in 1990.
The new name and accomanying logo reflect Clarion's mission to provide
clear, concise and compliant safety signs, labels, markings, and egress
systems. Clarion products are specifically designed to improve safety,
ensure compliance, and minimize corporate liability.
Notably, one of Clarion's new roles is to provide a full range of risk
engineering services. "This is a natural extension of our
expertise," says Geoffrey Peckham, president and CEO. "Clients
can now call us for hazard analysis, risk assessment, facility and product
safety label audits, and other related services."
Clarion products are used by more than 8,000 customers in 180 different
industries around the world. Their labels, signs, markings and egress
systems are installed on products, in commercial and residential
buildings, entertainment venues, ships, tunnels, power plants and a wide
range of other locations. Among Clarion's clients are Lockheed Martin,
Johnson & Johnson, General Electric, Verizon, the U.S. Army, and
Honeywell.
Clarion is also a distributor of photoluminescent signs and safety egress
systems, including products from Jalite. Clarion's photoluminescent line
includes directional route and exit safety systems now mandatory in
certain public buildings in many jurisdictions, including New York City.
They provide effective, bright contrast for text and graphical symbols,
ensuring that safety messages are quickly recognized by building occupants
in emergency situations. Plus, photoluminescent products are a green
solution for forward-looking builders who are constructing to LEED
standards. The environmentally friendly signs use no energy and
dramatically reduce both installation and maintenance costs.
Clarion And Industry, Working Together
AFIA (American Feed Industry Association)
Clarion Safety Systems partners with the AFIA to provide their members
with state-of-the-art safety labeling, enabling them to meet the design
requirements of the most current U.S. and international safety labeling
